Aadhar not mandatory for NRIs filing tax returns

The aadhar card is not mandatory for NRIs to file their income tax returns, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has clarified in a statement.

Filing details of the aadhar card number while submitting income tax returns from July 2017 does not apply to NRIs. Only residents of India or those who have lived in the country for 182 days or more in a year can obtain an aadhar card, as per the subsidies and benefits Act issues last year.

The embassy also clarified that the aadhar card was not mandatory to obtain a driver’s licence or a mobile SIM card.

The statement added that the aadhar number was one of several documents of address and identity proof for Indian citizens.
