The process for levying a Dh500 fine per month on Dubai residents who don’t have mandatory health cover was initiated on Saturday. The fine is added on for each month a resident or his/her dependents go without the health cover.
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has stressed that all residents, regardless of their visa type, need to have medical insurance. Sponsors are required by the law to provide insurance to their employees and dependents.
The Mandatory Health Insurance law was implemented in 2014 and was rolled out in a several phases. The deadline, however, was extended to March 31, 2017, after an increase in number of applicants.
The health insurance deadline for Dubai visitors was on December 31, 2016.
Phase one of the law required companies with 1,000 employees or more to be insured by the deadline of October 31, 2014.
Companies with 100 to 999 employees had to be insured as part of phase two, with a deadline of July 31, 2015.
