How to get an alcohol licence in Dubai

Alcohol-licence-300x192This is the season when days are spent exploring the great outdoors, evenings enjoyed over a BBQ and nights out under the stars, and for many of us, a refreshing alcoholic beverage to top off each occasion.

Local authorities have grown increasingly concerned that many Dubai residents fail to understand the requirement to hold an alcohol licence to not only buy, but to also store such drinks in their homes, regardless of whether they have been bought elsewhere. Failing to do so puts them at risk of prosecution, with penalties including heavy fines and even the loss of visas.

THE BASIC FACTS

-It is an offence to buy, transport, store, as a resident in Dubai without a valid alcohol licence

-In order to obtain an alcohol licence, you have to be non-Muslim, over 21 years of age, living in Dubai and earning a minimum of AED 3,000 per month

-Public drunken behaviour is not tolerated and consequences are far worse for those without an alcohol licence

-It costs AED 270 to buy an alcohol licence, which is all given back to you in the form of your favourite beverages

MYTH BUSTING

-Buying alcohol in the Northern Emirates is not illegal as you don’t need a Liquor Licence to buy from there, but transporting it back for consumption in Dubai is

-You CAN apply for an alcohol licence if the tenancy contract is not in your name – you just need an NOC from the person who holds the tenancy contract

-Married couples both need an alcohol licence in order to purchase and consume alcohol in the home. This can be done with both parties documents and an NOC from the tenancy contract holder, whether it’s the husband or wife

HERE ARE THE STEPS TO GET THE LICENCE:

-You must be non-Muslim, over 21, living in Dubai and earning a minimum of AED 3,000 per month

-Pick up an application from African + Eastern or MMI

-Fill out the application form, have it stamped by your employer and return it to the store along with the following documents:

o   Passport copies (front and back page)

o   Visa copy

o   Tenancy contract

o   Labour contract

o   One passport sized photograph

-Pay your AED 270 Dubai Police and Municipality Administration fees (don’t worry, you get this back to spend in store)

-Wait for the call to say your licence is ready
