The Kerala-born chairman, who set up the $1bn global conglomerate almost a quarter of a century ago, has grown the business to become a key player in the Middle East jewellery market, with as many as 80 stores across the region, and 3,000 staff.
It began for Alukkas when his father Varghese Alukkas started his first jewellery showroom in 1956. Following in his father’s footsteps, in 1987, Alukkas flew to UAE to explore the untapped jewellery market.
That same year, he set up his first shop in Abu Dhabi, followed by Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah. Since then, the group has expanded into the UK, and throughout the Gulf. In 2007, Alukkas opened the world’s largest gold and diamond jewellery store in Chennai.
Since the group’s inception, it has branched out to include other sectors such as real estate, textiles, money exchanges and internet radio.
