Ravi Shankar: India’s gift to music passes away at 92

India’s most gifted Sitar maestro passed away on Tuesday in San Deigo, USA, after a surgery to repair a respiratory valve. Ravi Shankar, popularly known in West Bengal as Robindro Shaunkar – Chowdhury was born in the holy city of Varnasi. He was active till his last days and has the distinction of promoting Indian Classical music just not in India, but also overseas. Perhaps is greatest international disciples were the Beatles who blended Indian classical sitar strains in their music.

Ravi Shankar has been a profilic musician and his heritage will continue with his offspring Anoushka Shankar, and the song-writer-singer Norah Jones.
