The Indian High School and the Indian Consulate co-hosted the Republic Day function at the IHS grounds this morning. The function started at around 9am with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Consul General of India Mr. Sanjay Verma. This was followed by the flag-break and Mr. Verma reading excerpts out of the President of India’s message to the nation.
Mr Verma also exhorted the children to read the Constitution of India. He felt that children have many things on their mind and while the focus is on science and commerce to earn a living, there must be overall development too. They should read atleast the preamble of the constitution so that they know what kind of India was dreamt by the founding fathers. He asked them to fulfill and enforce the constitution.
The speech was followed by inspection of the parade by the Consul General, which was followed by a march past of the students of the school, teachers and alumni. The day’s presentation included drills, dances, and the releasing of balloons. The theme of republic day was Conservation and this was portrayed through different ways by the children. In his speech the chairman of the school, Mr. Pancholia spoke about the them. He said it was conservation of not such the environment, but also about the upkeep of moral and social values.
The function was attended by a large number of Indians including the parents of the school children and special invitees. Approximately 5000 people attended the 2 hours function.
