The sunshine-yellow head band that held Sania Mirza’s black-brown locks together, stood out like a tiara. Significantly so, as Sania playing alongside American Bethanie-Mattek Sands, had swept aside the challenge of the second-seeded pairing of Russian Nadia Petrova and Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 in the final of the Dubai Duty Free WTA Tour event.
Sania and Mattek-Sands, who did the chasing in the second set and for a bit in the super tie-break, displayed great tenacity to take home $69,039 and 470 points for their week’s work.
The Hyderabadi said, “When you play a final, it’s not about the tennis, it is about nerve and trying to keep positive at all times. In finals, you don’t always get to see the best tennis, it’s always the team that is gutsier than the other that comes out on top.”
